STEFANIE POWERS (anglais)

Actress Stefanie Powers, whose charming and thoughtful real-life personality may most closely

resemble stunning renaissance woman Jennifer Hart, the character she portrayed on the hit

television series Hart to Hart, has combined a natural curiosity and passion for knowledge,

world travel and diverse cultures into both an award-winning acting career and an equally active

life committed to the preservation and protection of wildlife worldwide.

The cornerstone for her work in conservation is the William Holden Wildlife Foundation of

which she is co-founder and president. The William Holden Wildlife Foundation is a public

charity operating in Kenya in East Africa and named after Stefanie’s long-time life partner, the

late actor William Holden, who founded the Mt. Kenya Safari Club and Mt. Kenya Game Ranch

in the late 1950’s. The William Holden Wildlife Foundation Education Center currently serves

over 10,000 students a year and is located adjacent to the game ranch (now called the Mount

Kenya Wildlife Conservancy) created by Holden long before conservation was a word in popular

use. “The Foundation is a lifetime commitment,” Stefanie admits, “and not something I entered

into without understanding the full impact of the obligation.”

It is perhaps staggering to most of us who would find either acting or extensive philanthropic

work full-time occupations in themselves, but Stefanie’s life only begins there. She makes the

term “well-rounded” an understatement. Her acting credits include 28 feature films, such as

Experiment in Terror, The Interns, McLintock!, Die Die My Darling, Love Has Many Faces,

Stagecoach, Herbie Rides Again! and The Man Inside. Her television credits include three

series: The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., The Feather and Father Gang and, of course, Hart to Hart.

Among her many mini-series are: Washington: Behind Closed Doors, Deceptions, Mistral’s

Daughter, At Mother’s Request, Burden of Proof and Beryl Markham: A Shadow on the Sun,

which she also produced.

As a professional dancer, singer and actress since the age of 15, Powers has never forgotten her

first love, the musical theater, and has been able to combine a successful television and film

schedule with appearances in plays such as Annie Get Your Gun, My Fair Lady, Oliver! and

Applause, the first revival of the musical version of the classic film All About Eve. She appeared

with her Hart to Hart co-star Robert Wagner in the London West End debut of the play Love

Letters, and the following year appeared again in the West End in the production of the original

musical Matador. Stefanie continued her British connection with subsequent appearances in the

debut of the three-character play The Adjustment, and the elaborate West End production of The

King and I. She also toured the United States in the most recent Rogers and Hammersteinapproved

revival of their beloved musical. Her one woman show, One From the Hart, a musical

celebration of love, debuted in November, 2007. Her vocal prowess is also showcased on

STEFANIE POWERS –ON THE SAME PAGE, her debut recording on the Jambo Music label

on which she teams with veteran musician/arranger Page Cavanaugh. Page and Stefanie have

appeared on the concert stage together, including an appearance at New York’s Cabaret

Convention.

The success of the TV hit Hart to Hart led to the release of the series’first two years on DVD

(Sony Home Entertainment). The Hart to Hart DVDs feature interviews with Powers and

Wagner highlighted by anecdotes of the pairs’long-running professional relationship, which

included five years of the weekly, hour-long series plus eight, two-hour TV movies.

Documentaries have also played a part in Stefanie’s professional life. Highlights of those

documentaries include adventures in Northeastern Sumatra searching for orangutan habitats with

Professor Terry Maple, director of Zoo Atlanta and the Palm Beach Zoo, and experts from

Yerkes Primate Center, and Microsoft’s first onlineadventure magazine, Mungo Park, for which

she acted as correspondent for wildlife terra and fauna.

Other documentaries include the seven-hour series Funding Your Dreams, a financial guide to

the future for PBS, and the 13-part Wine Express, much acclaimed by Wine Connoisseur

Magazine, for AMC. Powers was also the subject of an Intimate Portrait, produced for Lifetime

Television.

Travel has always been an important part of her life. In pursuit of more meaningful experiences,

Powers has taught herself seven languages. “I never travel frivolously,” says Stefanie. “There is

always some prevailing curiosity or interest to pursue wherever I go. Of course, it is very

fortunate when work and travel combine. For instance, when filming The Good King for the

Family Channel took me to the Czech Republic in the beginning of its flowering as a destination,

I could enjoy exploring the country where my grandmother had lived for a time.”

And if that’s not enough, she has served on the boards of several American zoos, among them,

the Cincinnati Zoo, Zoo Atlanta and the Los Angeles Zoo (for which she is a Fellow), where she

works with species survival programs. She is a frequent keynote speaker for causes dear to her

heart such as Farm Sanctuary, which advocates humane treatment for farm animals, and the

Bushmeat Crisis, which alerts people to the effects of forest over-exploitation in Africa and the

world and its disastrous effect on wildlife. She has also been honored by the venerable Explorers

Club with its Lowell Thomas Award for her conservation efforts.

She has released four home videos: Introduction to Horseback Riding and Horse Care, Stefanie

Powers’ Broadway Workout—a fitness workout underscored with Broadway show tunes, and

PowerPilates 1 and 2 from Silver Foxes Network/Sony Home Video. The Pilates videos

spawned the book POWERS PILATES – Stefanie Powers’ Guide to Longevity and Well-Being

Through Pilates from Fireside Books, a division of Simon & Schuster.

“Every once in a while, all these things come crashing together,” comments Stefanie on her

crowded schedule. “You’re obviously going to have those moments if you involve yourself with

a lot of things.”

What’s her solution? Just keep going. “I feel very privileged to have been on the tail-end of the

‘Star System,’” explains Stefanie. “I began to work at 15, and when I was put under contract at

Columbia, they still believed in ‘grooming’ their young hopefuls. Because the studio was my

playground, that process allowed me to learn how movies were made. In many ways, the

experience of working with movie greats such as John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Bing Crosby,

Van Heflin, Glenn Ford, Lee Remick, Lana Turner, Cliff Robertson, David Niven and Claudia

Cardinale helped to give me a sense of the importance of balancing career and life. I became

friends with Tallulah Bankhead and Helen Hayes after our work together, and they gave me a

sense of appreciation and respect for all those greats who set such a high standard for all of us to

follow.

“But they all said the same thing – ‘when the makeup comes off, you still have to go home and

face your life; make sure it is as satisfying as the one you left at the dressing table.’ I think I

have.”
